V Mixer – The Ultimate FAQ Guide

It might seem obvious, but a lot of people aren’t actually aware of what V mixers are. In this guide today, we’ll discuss and give you information about where you can find the best V mixer manufacturers and suppliers.

Before we get to that though, let’s progressively learn about V mixers.

What is a V Mixer?

It’s a type or a kind of a mixer or a blender that is comprised of two (2) hollow shells, cylindrical in shape, and is fused at a 75 to 90-degree angle.

V mixer is suitable for mixing powder or granular materials in pharmaceutical, chemical, food, and other industries. It has the features of fast mixing speed, high uniformity, and easy cleaning.

The V-mixer is easy to operate, and its surface is made of high-quality stainless steel with polishing treatment, which is easy to clean.

v mixer (2)

An image of what a V mixer looks like

We know it as V mixer because of the shape of its shells – it’s in a “V-shaped” form for the sufficient production and operation of mixing solids that are bulk and dry like granules, powders, pellets, etc.

What is the Function of the V-Shaped Cone in a V Mixer?

The primary function of the V-shaped cone or shell in a V mixer is to allow free space in the cylinder during the blending.

v mixer 33

The V-shaped cone in a V mixer and how it functions

What this does, in return is it enables particles to follow smooth passages, that result to minimization of time consumption for blending.

Imagine a single-shelled blender or mixer, where if it’s filled up, there’s no space for the blending to take place. That’s the primary purpose of the V-shaped cone in a V mixer – to have ample space for the blending or the mixing to take place.

What is the Operating Principle of a V Mixer?

For you to have a full understanding of what a V mixer is, let’s briefly discuss its operating principle, or the principle of how it operates and functions.

v mixer 44

A V mixer being prepared for operations

This particular unit contains two (2) cylinders that are arranged to create a V shape. Usually, they’re at an angle that’s between 75 and 90 degrees Celsius.

Then, the outlet of the products that would be created and produced would be at the point where the two (2) ends of these cylinders meet; while the inlet feed or the place where the material is fed would be at the loading aperture or at the feed inlet.

The performance of mixing would be of 50%, and that would be if each turn of the blender, the product in both the cylinders move into a common section, then, they must be continuously repeated.

For a V mixer, the speeds of rotation aren’t that high. In fact that’s what makes V mixers the best and the most ideal for products that must remain cold or below heated temperatures.

How Do You Clean a V Mixer?

Cleaning a V mixer is not as complicated as how most people think of it.

However, it’s not as easy as cleaning a home blender for food, too.

The best and the most recommended process of how you can clean a V mixer would be the following steps:

  1. Prepare all of the needed things and materials you’ll need for cleaning.
    1. Alkaline detergent with silicate of soda, potassium hydroxide, and other cleaning agents.
    2. Water
  2. Clean it by starting from the inside of the cones, making sure that the mixture of the alkaline detergent and water is fine.
  3. Then, use lukewarm water and rinse it. Rinsing it two (2) times is considered to be the most recommended.
  4. After that, perform a third (3rd) rinse, which you can consider as a sampling rinse to see if there are any leftover dirt or unwanted agents in the mixer.

Alternatively, V mixer manufacturers and suppliers usually offer V blender and mixer cleaning machines. These machines will allow you to use them on one (1) cylinder, allowing it to work and operate for a few minutes, and voila – you’ll all be done!

Where Do You Use V Mixers?

Because of its engineering and design, you can find a lot of many different uses and applications for V mixers.

v mixer

You can use V mixers in a wide array of business sectors and industries!

Particularly, though, you use V mixers to mix and process dry bulk solids. The most common ones would include, but wouldn’t be limited to:

Food Processing Industry

In this particular sector or industry, the main goal would be to produce consumer-needed food and goods.

Part of the most common produces include:

  • Dairy Powders
  • Cereals
  • Coffee Mixes
  • Vitamin Supplements and Complements
  • Spices
  • Salt and Sugar
  • And Many More!

Plastics Industry

For the plastics industry, the products of which you can get in using V mixers would be due to the processing or the handling of raw materials.

Here’s a quick, easy, and simple list of what you can do using V mixers:

  • Pellet Mixing
  • Masterbatch Mixing and Blending
  • And Many More

NOTE: They’re processes that help in the overall manufacturing and production of plastics, not entirely the production of plastics themselves.

Chemicals and Biochemical Industry

When it comes to the mixing and the producing of chemicals, using V mixers would be one of the most ideal.

Apart from the fact that it can carry a huge load of weight, you can also use it as a complementary machine to aid the production process.

Some of the most customary applications you can do with it in this specific industry include:

  • Mineral Mixture or Transformation
  • Mixture of Metallic Powders
  • Breaking Down of Small Materials Into Finer and More Granulated Forms
  • And Many More!

Construction and Structural Industry

You might be wondering isn’t the V mixer only applicable to produce finely granulated materials and products? How would you find success in using it in the structural or the construction industry?

More often than not, the use of it in this particular business sector would be involved in:

  • Pre-Blending of Steel
  • Mixture of Different Fine Particle Alloys and Metals
  • Dry Powder Mixing

These aren’t all though, in fact, there are far more applications of it in the construction or the structural industry. Try it for yourself and see how well it can benefit you!

Pharmaceutical and Mineral Industry

Have you ever wondered how pharmacists were able to distribute different types and kinds of minerals and vitamins into small tablets and pills?

It’s all because of heavy-duty blenders and mixers – like the V mixer that we’re talking about today.

With V mixers, pharmaceutical companies are able to break down minerals like potassium, iron, and other minerals, combining them to create medicinal products for consumers.

Usually, the usage of V mixers would be before granulation.

What’s the Difference Between a Double Cone Mixer and a V Mixter?

Isn’t a V mixer or blender the same as a double cone blender, since it has two (2) cones, too? Apparently, no, they’re not the same.

double cone blender

Difference between double cone and V blender

As a matter of fact, it’s labeled and known to be a double cone blender because it has two (2) cone-shaped blenders mixed and combined as one.

One of the most obvious differences between them would be double-cone blenders are less popular and less used in various business sectors and industries. Moreover, they also have just one (1) access cover, which allows inspections and cleaning to be quick and easy.

Therefore, the blending time of double-cone blenders are longer, but it can allow the simultaneous mixing of about two (2) to five (5) different ingredients.

V mixers and blenders, on the other end of the spectrum, have shorter blending times, which means they’re more effective and efficient. In this, the blending is performed and accomplished using two (2) fused and joined cylinders that divide and intermesh the particle movement.

Because of its headroom, you’ll be able to mix about two (2) to ten (10) different ingredients simultaneously.

Double-cone blenders promote the idea of free-flow blending and mixing, while V mixers operate in an intermesh and dividing method.

Is a Sigma Mixer the Same as a V Mixer?

No, a sigma mixer is far from what a V mixer is, while many professionals consider them to offer the same type and quality of results, we don’t recommend using a sigma mixer if the requirement is a V mixer.

Sigma Mixer

An image of what a Sigma mixer looks like

Sigma mixers, oftentimes, are only recommended to be used for materials that contain high viscosity levels. For instance, if your process requires the kneading and the mixing of high-viscosity materials – or those in the consistencies of honey – sigma mixers would be applicable.

In addition, V mixers are for the use of mixing and blending dry powder, as well as other finely granulated forms of materials.

Is a V Cone Mixer and a V Mixer the Same?

Don’t confuse yourself – V mixers and V blenders are the same thing. It seems pretty self-explanatory given the fact that both blend and mix mean exactly the same thing.

So, when you encounter the term V mixer, immediately think about it as a V blender, too.

What is a Ribbon Blender Used For?

Ribbon blenders are powder handling machines you use for mixing powder components that are only pre-processed.

Chemicals Ribbon Mixer Blender

An image of what a ribbon blender is

For instance, sugars that haven’t been finely broken down, you can use a ribbon blender to eradicate its coarseness and produce finer and more granulated material.

You can consider ribbon blenders to be shear mixers, which are, of course regularly used for the mixing of solids.

They’re called “ribbon” blenders because of the shape of the mixers inside it. They’re shaped as ribbons but they’re derived from thin metal material.

https://youtu.be/tpt5VerLSsg

What is an Octagonal Blender?

Octagonal Blender

An image of what an octagonal blender looks like

Apart from V mixers, sigma mixers, and ribbon blenders, there’s another powder handling machine that’s considered popular in the industry – and that is none other than the octagonal blender.

Octagonal blenders are blenders or mixers that tumble and rotate slowly. Moreover, they’re specially designed to outright perform mixing and lubricating of granules and dry powders for the formation of capsules and tablets.

Usually, though, you’ll want to use octagonal lenders if you want to keep the quality of the materials. How does it do this? – Through the slow movement and rotation of it, instead of having high rotational speeds like classifiers and other types of blenders.

Can You Use V Mixers For Solids?

Yes, absolutely! As a matter of fact, V mixers are used for the production of solid-solid mixtures (homogeneous).

Ideally speaking, though, pure solids that would be bigger than pendants might not be the best types of products you can use V mixers for. If they’re coarse, slightly bigger than a quarter, you can.

In addition, you can also process low viscosity and slurry-type of products with them, too!

What is a V Powder Mixer?

small v powder mixer 11

Figure 1 – An example of an image of a V powder mixer

It’s a type of powder mixer that’s shaped like the letter “V” and is often suited to be used for mixing and blending powders, particles, and materials.

Also known as tumble or rotary mixers, the primary movement of these V mixers would be in a tumbling motion. This is what drives the materials, particles, or products inside the shells to blend and mix in with each other.

We’ll talk and discuss more about how V powder mixers work in the latter part of this FAQ guide.

How Many Ingredients Can V Powder Mixers Mix and Blend?

Contrary to what you might have believed in, V powder mixers aren’t small-time machines.

v powder mixing 22
Figure 2 – You’ll be able to blend and mix many different ingredients using V mixers!

In fact, they perform better and more efficient compared to double cone mixers because you’ll be able to blend up to ten (10) different ingredients using it.

Just keep in mind that the measurements will depend on the size of your V mixer. For instance, if you only have a 3-liter mixer, of course, you wouldn’t be able to fit 10 ingredients that are 500 ml each.

What is a Bin Blender?

Contrary to what V powder mixers and V blenders are, bin blenders are special blenders that are shaped like bins.

They usually run on the principle of free-fall bending, which is subtly similar to the working principle of V powder mixers. One of the common properties that V powder mixers and bin blenders have is the fact that the shells or the vessels don’t have agitators or blades inside.

Compared to V powder mixers, though, these bin blenders are easier to clean and are more convenient and simpler to maintain, thanks to the wide openings that it has.

Now, let’s get onto comparing V powder mixers to the other type of common mixer or blender, which is the double cone blender.

What Are the Usual Capacities of V Powder Mixers?

V Mixer
Figure 4 – A large-capacity V powder mixer

When it comes to capacity, it’ll vary from one machine to another. As we all know, V powder mixers isn’t just served to us in a singular sense – meaning, you’ll find a lot of it in the market as you go on.

To help you understand this better and in a more detailed way, the capacities of these V powder mixers range from 3L up to 20L.

3L V powder mixers are those that are often used in laboratories to acquire small samples. Those that go up from 10, even 20L are the ones that are used in the industrial sector, which can be for foodstuff, animal feeds, chemical, cosmetic, and even the large production of pharmaceutical products.

Nevertheless, it’s still right to contact and inquire to your manufacturer what the capacities (maximum and recommended) are.

V Powder Mixer vs. Double Cone Blender

V powder mixers and double cone blenders are two (2) of the most commonly compared and contrasted types of mixers in the industry.

In the table below, we’ll quickly discuss the differences and the distinctions between V powder mixers and double cone blenders:

FeatureDouble Cone BlenderV Powder Mixer
ApplicationFor applications that require fragile mixing and blending – the chemical industry, among others.Often used in cosmetics, nutraceutical, food, pharmaceutical, and related industries.
ShapeDouble cone blenders are conjoined two (2) cones that sit on top of one another.Comprised of two (2) fused and welded shells that form the letter “V.”
Mixing or BlendingGentle but effective mixing, usually is the answer to product or particle breakage – homogeneous results.Ideal for mixing particles that require specific or precise formulation.
MaintenanceEasy to clean and maintain because of the large space.Quite challenging to clean and maintain because of the restricted or thin space.
CostRegular price, not that extravagant when it comes to pricing.Regular price, not that extravagant when it comes to pricing.

NOTE: For the cost, it’ll obviously depend on the manufacturer or the supplier you’re going to be purchasing from. So, it’s really going to be difficult to determine the cost if you don’t have any basis.

Is a V Powder Mixer a Dry Powder Mixer?

Yes, you can consider a V powder mixer to be a dry powder mixer because you’ll be able to use it to mix the combination of granule materials, dry powders, as well as a couple of viscous liquids.

This is the reason why V powder mixers are used in a wide variety of business sectors and industries like the foodstuff industry, chemical industry, biochemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, animal feeds industry, cosmetics industry, and many more!

What is the Principle of Blending?

The principle of blending that these V powder mixers have is tumble blending. This is because the vessel or the shell of the machine tumbles, spins, and rotates.

That being said, the materials, powders, products, and particles inside it tumble and spin, too, causing the mixture. Ideally, the particles and powders go through the shearing process, which mixes and combines the contents inside it.

How Do You Use V Powder Mixers?

Figure 7 – An image of a V powder mixer being used (tumbling)

The using process of V powder mixers is actually easy. As a matter of fact, the summary of how you can use your V powder mixers, would be the following:

  1. The particles, powders, and materials are fed into the mixer.
  2. From there, the materials are tumbled, rotated, and spun continuously until the correct consistency is attained.
  3. When the right size and mixture is achieved, that’s the time that the output is pulled through from the mixer.

This is just a general or a standard structure of how you use V powder mixers. As you can see, it’s a generic flow of processes and isn’t actually specific.

Don’t be confused, this process is only here to help you understand more how these V powder mixing machines work and function.

What Is A V Blender?

V blender or twin shell blender is suitable for industrial and laboratory productions. V blenders come in different sizes, capacities, and optional accessories to meet your requirements. Its compact design and ultra-efficient productivity speed help to achieve the desired results and better performance in minimum duration. V blenders ensure high mixing uniformity and fast mixing speed with convenient cleaning options.

Read this guide to learn about the design, working principle, benefits, applications, buying guide, and many other pieces of information.

What Is The Design Of A V Blender?

1# Stainless Steel:

V blender is made up of highly finished stainless steel material. The stainless steel is non-corrosive and offers maximum durability over other materials.

2# Two V-shaped cylinders:

It has two V-shaped asymmetric cylinders that are welded between the angles of 75° and 90°. The cylinders are welded to ensure a diffusive mixing of the entire components, reduce segregation, and drop the mixing duration. Additionally, these V-shaped cylinders also support the easy removal of the material once the mixing process is completed.

3# Inlet Doors:

It has two inlet doors that allow quick entry of material.

4# Digital Panel:

There is a digital panel from where you can monitor controller speed and time.

5# Shaft Axis:

Its shaft axis allows free rotation of V-shaped cylinders to achieve the right homogeneity.

6# High-speed Intensifier:

V blenders also contain high-speed intensifier bars or lump breakers for the disintegration of agglomerates in the charge material. However, the provision of an intensifier bars is fully optional.

The provision of intensifier bar has both advantages and disadvantages. You can achieve dry as well as wet mixing of fine and coarse particles. It produces cleaning problems, adds undesired particle attrition, and sealing problems for shafts.

7# Discharge Valve:

There is a butterfly-shaped valve to maintain manual discharge of products from the V blender. However, it is recommended to fill in the materials in symmetrical layers to ensure smooth mixing and discharge.

How Does V Blender work?

The primary mode of action of V blender is based on the process of diffusion. It is characterized by the random movement of the granules and particles. It generates diffusive blending that supports the movement of the individual particles. This diffusive blending ensures a high degree of homogeneity. As there is no agitator inside the V blender, the rotation of shells generates rotation and optimal mixing of the product.

V blender generates an axial flow that results in a rapid uniform mixing of material without the use of deflating blades. The blending speed plays an important role in the mixing of materials. For example, the shear forces are very low at lower blending speeds. Likewise, higher blending speeds generate high shear forces. The total critical speed of V blenders is approximately 50% to 80%.

It is higly recommended to fill up to 70% of the total internal space of the V mixer to ensure smooth mixing of the powdered and solid particles. The blending time of V blender is based on the blending speed and nature of the particles. Usually, blending time varies from 8 to 10 minutes depending upon the nature of the material to be blended.

v blender 2

What Are The Mixing Parameters Of V Blenders?

Three parameters influence the homogeneity and working capacity of V blenders.

1# Mixing Batch Volume:

As I told you before the V blender must be loaded between 40% and 70% of its total volume. As the V blender has two legs of the cylinder to rotate the solid particles, there must be sufficient space available for free rotation. The overfilling of the V blender requires a longer duration than usual to mix all the solid particles. Hence, appropriate filling of V blender is essential to maintain complete diffusion of materials between the two cylinders of it.

2# Mixing Speed:

The mixing speed of the V blender is proportional to the centrifugal speed generated by its two cylinders. A typical centrifugal force generated by V blenders is approximately 10-25 rpm. The optimal mixing speed lies between 50% and 80% of the critical rotation speed. Likewise, it also promotes shear force. Moreover, the mixing speed is based on the total volume of the V blender. The bigger the size, the slower the speed is.

3# Symmetrical Loading Style:

A symmetrical loading style is very important to cut long mixing time to short. It is recommended to proceed by layers. If you load all the ingredients in the 1st leg and 2nd leg does not contain an equal volume of ingredients in it, it will disturb the loading speed and loading time. Always add ingredients in the form of layers to optimize the cycle time in each run.

v blender 3

Benefits Of V Blender:

These are some significant benefits of V blenders over conventional mixers.

  1. V blenders are easy to operate, charge, discharge, move, and clean.
  2. Its titled and cylindrical body design ensures a complete discharge of product materials.
  3. V blenders are safe and reliable to use because of their digital timer, waterproof control box, and overload protection device.
  4. V blenders are suitable for a variety of commercial and industrial applications including GMP food and pharmaceutical productions.
  5. The optimal filling range of V blenders is approximately 50L to 150L.
  6. V blenders are made of rust-free and high-finish SS304, 316L stainless steel material & carbon steel material.
  7. As V blender does not have moving blades, it minimizes particle size reduction and attrition.
  8. As V blender does not contain shaft projection, it eliminates product contamination.
  9. V blenders support internal attachments such as lump breakers and liquid dispensers to diversify its application.
  10. Its Bin chagrining system allows a closed and dust-free environment for charging and discharging.
  11. V blender is perfect for fragile granules, soft powders, and solid particles.

v blender 4

Disadvantages Of V Blenders:

Although V blenders are suitable for a variety of applications, there are some drawbacks to using V blenders. There are two main disadvantages of using V blenders.

  1. V blenders require high headroom to install and operate at an optimal level.
  2. V blenders ensure equal size and densities of the mixing particles.
  3. V mixer is not designed for particles of varying sizes and densities because they keep apart at the time of removal.

Application Of V Blender:

V blenders are suitable for mixing free-flowing solids, powders, and granules. V blenders are appropriate used for the following industrial and commercial applications:

  1. Pesticides & herbicides industries
  2. Food processing industries
  3. Plastic industries
  4. Chemical industries
  5. Construction industries
  6. Paint industries
  7. Cosmetic industries

What Is The Difference Between V Blender & Ribbon Blender?

1# Design:

A ribbon blender has a U-shaped cylindrical design with a laterally placed trough. On other hand, the V blender has two V-shaped cylinders or various cylinder considerations attached to each other.

2# Agitator Or No Agitator:

A ribbon blender contains an agitator. The agitator has both inner and outer helical ribbons. These ribbons help to move the material in counter-clockwise direction. On contrary, V blender usually does not have agitators. Instead of this, there is an intensifier bar or rotator shaft for the movement of materials.

3# Rotatory Movements:

Likewise, axial and radial movements are also involved to mix the materials in a ribbon blender. The V blender allows rotational movement to homogenize the ingredients in it.

4# Working Principle:

A ribbon blender works on the principle of convection and diffusions with a rotational speed of 300 fpm. Likewise, a V blender works on the principle of diffusion with a rotational speed between 5 and 25 rpm.

5# Space For Placement:

A ribbon blender needs appropriate floor space with relatively low overhead requirements. On contrary, require small circular floor prints with significant ceiling height.

6# Suitability:

A ribbon blender is ideal for producing high-quality and lump-free blending mixtures for solid-solid particles. V blender is suitable for granules, soft powders, and solid granules.

7# Heat vs. No Heat:

As a ribbon blender generates more heat, it is not suitable for heat-sensitive applications. On other hand, a V blender generates less heat and suitable for heat-sensitive applications.

In the light of the above-mentioned considerations, the selection criteria between a V blender and ribbon blender is based on the requirements of materials. Note all the differences between V blenders and ribbon blenders to save several thousand dollars before purchase.
